5 Content Ideas to Build Credibility as a Thought Leader

As a thought leader, how do you connect with your audience? Thought leadership is not about what you can sell but rather an opportunity to practice what you preach and provide meaningful insights to your audience. Your status as a thought leader starts with the content you provide online.

According to the 2020 Edelman-LinkedIn B2B Thought Leadership Impact Study, “B2B Decision-Makers are spending meaningful time-consuming Thought Leadership content that, when done well, can significantly influence brand perception and buying behaviors.”

Whether you’re an entrepreneur, freelancer, small business owner, or a corporate CEO, Thought Leadership contributes value to you, your team, and your organization.

Thought Leadership Engagement by the Numbers:

  • 29% of decision-makers say they gain valuable insights more than half the time with Thought Leadership content

  • 48% of decision-makers engage an hour or more per week with Thought Leadership content

  • 89% say Thought Leadership has enhanced their perceptions of an organization

Whether your industry is B2B or B2C, consider these five content ideas to deliver insight to your audience, expand your following, and gain trust as a leader in your field.

1. Launch a Podcast

Podcasts are growing in popularity across all industries. Podcasting is a great way to present your personality, deliver industry insights, and connect with your audience. Podcasting is also a helpful tool for building your professional network as you welcome guests and share your content. Having a podcast allows you to create content that you can repurpose for social media, such as graphics and video clips.

2. Develop a Webinar

Practice your teaching skills with a webinar containing your curated content. Webinars can be on-demand or live—choose the format that suits your team and audience best.

What is the state of the industry? What are helpful tactics to achieve success in your field? Webinars cover various topics, creating infinite possibilities. Webinars are a beneficial outlet for generating brand awareness and attracting new clients or customers.

3. Publish Blogs & Case Studies

Blogs and case studies are content options that build trust with your audience—no matter the industry. Blog content addresses various topics in your industry. What should people in your field know? Specify your audience and deliver content they will find meaningful or beneficial.

If you’re going to commit to a blog, make sure to publish consistently, at least once a month. If your blog is not kept up-to-date, new website visitors will get the impression that you aren’t engaged, disqualifying you or your organization as a “go-to” in your industry due to outdated content.

Case studies are another strong content marketing avenue because they showcase the products or successful work you’ve accomplished with your team and clients. Do you have a project that performed well or reaped successful ROI? Convey the project’s concept, process, and results. Success stories enable people to see your products or services firsthand and will ignite trust for your organization.

4. Host a Web Show

Unlike podcasts, web shows are live video sessions, presenting opportunities to engage directly with your audience via comments, polls, or live Q&As. Web shows provide an outlet for showcasing your personal brand, as well as your organization’s voice and values. Facebook and YouTube are ideal platforms for streaming live web shows.

5. Create E-Books & Whitepapers

Are you knowledgeable about a specific topic in your industry? Convert your thoughts into downloadable documents for your audience. E-Books are lengthier documents, ranging from 10-20 pages for best engagement. Whitepapers are more condensed, commonly consisting of 3-8 pages. Both will showcase your in-depth expertise, providing value to your audience. E-Books and whitepapers are also effective tools for funneling new customers or clients.
